The Holy Modal Rounders

Mr. Spaceman

Composed by Steve Weber

Song Review by

Supposedly written by Steve Weber in response to Johnny Cymbal's 1962 hit "Mr. Bass Man" (there are certainly similarities, though not quite enough to get him in trouble -- nevertheless, Cymbal is often credited as a co-writer just to be safe), "Mr. Spaceman" is an early example of folk-rock. There's no percussion, in fact there are no instruments at all except for Weber's guitar and vocals and Peter Stampfel's keening fiddle work. But this is definitely a song with one foot in the folk tradition and one ear cocked toward pop radio, with a straightforward verse-chorus-verse melody that sets it apart from the more traditional folk material of the Holy Modal Rounders' early records. Like much of those records, though, there's an endearing goofiness to "Mr. Spaceman," the same silly sense of humor that was the duo's trademark.
