Robert Johnson

Last Fair Deal Gone Down

Composed by Robert Johnson

Song Review by

The catalogue of Robert Johnson is littered with minor classics and overlooked masterpieces, and “Last Fair Deal Gone Down” is certainly one of these, and it’s lyric in particular stands comparison as any in Johnson’s canon. The song essentially is a series of immensely clever one-liners, such as the magnificent “If you cry about a nickel, you’ll die for a dime”. Musically, the song is superb – Keith Richards once said that he was amazed only one guitarist played on the records as due to the complexity, he assumed there were two or more – this is certainly true of “Last Fair Deal Gone Down”; the counter rhythms are audacious, and the song’s melody is terrific. Without doubt, one of the lesser-known gems of Johnson’s catalogue.
