Kathy's Waltz

Composed by Dave Brubeck

Song Review by

“Kathy’s Waltz” was part of a tradition for composer Dave Brubeck, naming songs in honor of his family, though Columbia botched the spelling of his daughter Cathy’s name on Time Out. The piece begins in four, switching to waltz time as alto saxophonist Paul Desmond makes his entrance. Joe Morello’s brushwork and Eugene Wright’s spacious single beat to the bar bass line provide the foundation for Brubeck’s jaunty piano solo. His older brother Howard Brubeck scored the piece for the quartet with symphony orchestra on the album Brandenburg Gate Revisited. Guitarist Carlos Barbosa-Lima, percussionist Mongo Santamaria and pianist David Benoit are among the artists who have also recorded “Kathy’s Waltz.”
