After punk's disruption and post-punk's gloom, and in the midst of war and economic decay, British chart music in the early '80s just wanted to get very very silly indeed. There's just no other way to explain Haysi Fantayzee's debut single "John Wayne Is Big Leggy," with its repeated refrain of ? and this is a direct quote ? "Shotgun gimme gimme lowdown fun boy okay yeah showdown." Set to a galloping, Adam and the Ants-like big beat and twangy guitar, the lyrics concern the dead film star and his Indian girlfriend attempting to have sex but being stopped by the size of his beer gut, a scenario that singers Jeremy Healy and Kate Garner (along with producer/songwriter Paul Caplin) tried to claim was political satire, although they were never quite clear as to exactly what was being satirized. Regardless, it all sounds like an enormous put-on, but it's an entertaining one for anyone with a taste for early '80s ephemera.
