Another Gene Clark highlight on the Mr. Tambourine Man album, "Here Without You" is another example of his incredible songwriting abilities at a young age (he was only about 19). In this mid-tempo and very melancholy ballad, Clark's use of imagery (city streets, meeting people, etc.) is perfect and makes it a very good illustration of the Los Angeles that he was experiencing. With its Beatles-inspired melody, it was one of the more perfect examples of the Byrds' early style. A fine, early alternate version can be found on Preflyte (or In the Beginning on Rhino).
