Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark

(Forever) Live and Die

Song Review by

"(Forever) Live and Die" sounds like an attempt to balance the straightforward, unashamed pop of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark's breakthrough US hit "If You Leave" with the artsy, echo-laden atmospherics of the albums that had come before. It's only semi-successful on either end; unlike "If You Leave" and most of the duo's earlier UK hits, the song lacks a compelling instrumental hook, and Stephen Hague's extra-slick production doesn't suit the languid, slowly unfolding melody, which probably would have sounded much more at home on a more low-key album like Architecture and Morality. As it stands, "(Forever) Live and Die" sounds oddly unfinished, albeit pleasant enough.
