With its lazy, fingerpicking blues guitar figure, "Coconut" is one of Harry Nilsson's best-remembered original compositions. Musically, there is a strong Bahamian feel to the music, and the lyrics -- while arguably a bit of nonsense -- are charming nonetheless. It's based on the old saying "the cause is the cure," and it sounds as though it's a recipe for a hangover cure -- a subject that Nilsson was intimately familiar with. The song provided Nilsson with a surprise Top 40 hit, and it was also used in a couple of early-'70s television advertisements. Fred Schneider (of the B-52's) cut a wickedly wild version for the Everybody Sings Nilsson tribute album.
