If there ever was a song for the heady 1967 rock period that could be termed psychedelic, it surely must be this masterful ballad. Closing out Jimi Hendrix's brilliant Axis: Bold As Love, this, the title track, utilizes a unique lyrical metaphor: Hendrix uses color association to define mood and mood swings. Musically, the song is equally striking, being a wedding of psychedelic rock and Curtis Mayfield-inspired soul. Filled with octave-soaked chord changes and some devastating solos from Hendrix, it's easily one of the best performed songs on the album. An amazing, early instrumental version is now available on the box set The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
