Tales of Us The Next Day Modern Vampires of the City Random Access Memories
Old The Electric Lady Love in Flying Colors Tomorrow's Harvest

It was a year filled with surprises, namely surprise comebacks and albums from some of music's biggest stars. It started at the dawn of the year, when David Bowie returned from hiatus with "Where Are We Now?" on his birthday, and it concluded in the waning weeks of December, when Beyoncé dropped her eponymous fifth album out of the blue. In between came My Bloody Valentine's decades-in-the-making comeback and the heavily-hyped return of Daft Punk, who pulled off the odd trick of delivering an ode to classic prog albums and having a genuine disco hit that defined the year. All these records show up on the following year-end lists of AllMusic's editors but those are hardly the only things we loved this year. Like so many other pop pundits, we fell for the charms of Haim, got seduced by the dark glamour of Queens of the Stone Age, loved how Superchunk hated music, and also were enchanted by Vampire Weekend's elegant tales of New York City, but we also had our individual quirks. The album that pops up on most lists is Goldfrapp's Tales of Us. Many of us love Julia Holter, AlunaGeorge, and the Foreign Exchange, and that's not to mention the other passion projects that give us all reasons to love 2013.

Like so many others, I would certainly argue that 2013 has been a very, very good year music, maybe even an excellent one. Not everything I've loved has made these two lists of 20 -- I have an expanded list on my Tumblr (where there is also a reissue list), as well as a Spotify song list -- but everything here has provided some amount of sustained pleasure over the year…and it's a very close call between QOTSA and Pistol Annies for my top slot.

This was an exceptionally strong year for music on all fronts: Veteran acts returned from lengthy hiatuses to make some of their finest albums (Daft Punk, Boards of Canada, and yes, Franz Ferdinand), young artists made attention-getting debuts (Savages, Haim, Chvrches), and performers in their prime reminded us why we cared in the first place (Kanye West, Goldfrapp, Vampire Weekend). AlunaGeorge, Charli XCX, and Sky Ferreira brought different but equally compelling edges to songs that could -- and should -- dominate the charts, while the Knife and Julia Holter found their own ways to blur the boundaries between pop and the avant-garde. All of this made whittling down the year's best to a relatively svelte 20 even more challenging than usual, so my honorable mentions include Broadcast's Berberian Sound Studio, Co La's Moody Coup, Factory Floor's self-titled debut, Fauns' Lights, and Mood Rings' VPI Harmony.

AlunaGeorge - Body Music
Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest

Lots of surprises on the album list this year. Records that came out of nowhere to thrill me (Legs, Pure Bathing Culture, Tony Molina), bands that were better than I thought they would be (Joanna Gruesome, Gap Dream), and bands that followed up really good records with something just as nice (Cate Le Bon, Amor De Dias), which is rare. Plus, the Pastels made maybe the best record of their long career, Medicine defied the odds and made a comeback that stands with their best work of (too many) years ago, and Washed Out managed to turn it around and deliver the best record Chapterhouse never made. And the Ancients made the best album Ride never made! The biggest shock for me was Aleister X, mostly because I never thought I'd be so into an album with a song on it called "Cheeseburger Tits." The record plays out like a beautifully sick L.A. version of Denim if Lawrence was into coke instead of smack, and hip-hop instead of junk-shop glam. Wrong, I know, but I have to be true to myself, right? That's what these lists are about and that's why even though I really liked the Daft Punk album, it just didn't hit me the way these others did so I had to cut it. It's lurking in the background though, just like albums by Daniel Avery, Icona Pop, the Mantles, Beaches, Saturday Looks Good to Me, Pusha T, and many more are...

All I want you to take away from the songs list is that it's never too late to release the best song of your long life...hello, Pet Clark.

A heavily electronic selection this year. I've been well into techno, and have also been chilling out to a bunch of ambient and electronica stuff. There's been lots of J-rock and visual kei this year as usual; most of it is not available in the West and therefore is not on this list, though a few nuggets have snuck on. And while my metal listening has diminished considerably, a few crushingly heavy classics have made the grade.

Crabbing about how there are too many selections every year is getting more and more clichéd, but this year Mac Miller’s great come-up and Eminem’s great comeback both got the ax off my list, so go ahead and cut and paste that cliché right here. Dang, I wanted to get that great Gary Numan album on here too, but regardless, this was a year where A$AP, Etana, and extra-large egos (Kanye, Pusha, and Gambino) ruled the roost for me. Who knows what 2014 has in store?

An odd numbered year yielded an odd assortment of favorites (Carcass, Daft Punk, Richard Thompson, Janelle Monae, Ylvis), but even the world's most prescient fortune cookie could never have predicted that David Bowie and Paul McCartney would issue their best long players in decades, or that Ian Ziering would jump headfirst into a 25-foot prehistoric shark's mouth with a chainsaw and carve his way out of its stomach.

Although I joined the staff late in the year, I'm an obsessive keeper of lists and records and had been personally bookmarking my favorite releases throughout 2013. I tend to pay close attention to the music being made around me in my home state of Michigan and I'm thrilled to include no less than seven acts from the Great Lakes state in my year-end round-up. From widely acclaimed albums to obscure singles, the most important thing to me was that all of this music became classic in my own mind.

This isn't so much a "Best of 2013" list as a "Here's what my feeble brain remembers hearing and enjoying from 2013 that wasn't a straight-up reissue." A couple of these might look like reissues, but there's enough previously unheard content that I felt they weren't simple reissues. So here they are, presented in non-judgmental, alphabetical order. All the hits, all the time.

Any year that starts with a new Yo La Tengo album is always going to be a good year and the rest of the old timers didn't disappoint either. Nick Cave, Superchunk, Bill Janovitz, and Sebadoh all returned to fill my list, but there were also some great debuts from the indie-rock world as well as the electronic one. Picking a top 20 was always going to be difficult so I thought it would be good to mention the others that didn't make the cut but were still great. The Men, Low, the Haxan Cloak, Special Request, Factory Floor, Shifted, and Vatican Shadow all deserved to be in there as well. 2013 certainly turned out to be another great year for music.
