Looking back, it's hard not to see 1994 as a pivotal year in '90s pop music: the close of the decade's first act and the dawn of its second, with the April suicide of Kurt Cobain dramatically closing the door on the rise of alternative rock. Even if Kurt had managed to stick around, there was no denying that the tide was shifting, the grip of grunge loosening as such bratty upstarts as Green Day and garage geeks as Weezer began racking up the big modern-rock hits while Beck, Guided by Voices, and Pavement all worked the fringes of indie rock. Rock wasn't the only genre seeing the winds of change, either. Such early '90s hip-hop superstars as Public Enemy and Arrested Development saw their status slip as the east coast titans Nas and the Notorious B.I.G. rose. But perhaps the biggest ruckus in pop came out of England with the explosion of Britpop, spearheaded by Blur's magnificent Parklife -- yet it was soon overshadowed by the debut of Oasis, whose Definitely Maybe turned out to be the U.K. equivalent of Nevermind: It changed the sound and style of British rock & roll and provides one of many reasons to love 1994.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Like any year that provides a surplus of favorites, I've decided to limit any crossovers from the albums and singles lists: hence, there's no "Sabotage," no "Girls & Boys," no "Cigarettes & Alcohol," no "Babies," no "Loser," no "Cut Your Hair" on the singles list, although they certainly get as much play as anything in my top ten here. That's a testament to the strength of the albums released during this year, but it also indicates how in '94 every style needed a strong single to push through: even lo-fi indie rockers needed something that could earn semi-regular rotation on MTV. In a time where singles often don't make a splash for much longer than the day they're leaked onto the net, it's hard not to miss that just a little bit.

Although I was only four years old at the time (sorry), 1994 turned out to be a huge year for my future music taste, and I could easily put several albums from this list into my favorite records ever. It was the death of grunge and the birth of Britpop, with R.E.M. still jangling away regardless, but I was too busy making macaroni pictures to pay any attention. So with the help of significant hindsight, here are my top 10 albums and singles from 1994 (completely Wiggles-free).

Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Weezer - Weezer
Nirvana - MTV Unplugged in New York

There was such an embarrassment of great albums released in '94 it was really hard to whittle my list down to just 20. This was the year I first started buying music in earnest, and many of these albums have become firm favorites in my collection which I still regularly listen to today. However, while my taste was trending to alt-rock on the albums front, I was still a heavy listener to Top 40 radio, as can be seen below.
