Austin-based singer-songwriter Benjamin Cissner delivers his own distinct brand of dark folk on his new album, Birds in the Night. Featuring a blend of songs that are sometimes weary and knowing with tunes that bounce and crackle with energy, Cissner isn't painting with just one brush. There's an eerie propulsion to songs like "Bad Mark" and "Nothing to Do But to Wait," contrasted with the shuffle of "Fifty-One Fifty" and the happily ambling "Chippy's Lament," and it all adds up to make an engaging, thoroughly melodic experience.

Birds in the Night is due out April 22.
