Formed in Kalamazoo, MI after the demise of local band the Breaks, the Menthols went rather quickly from the party scene in their hometown to high-profile gigs like South by Southwest in Austin, TX. An early lineup featuring Sean Barney (vocals, bass), Chris VandenBosch (vocals, guitar), and Justin Miller (guitar) was eventually solidified with the recruitment of Jeff Mahannah (who as a teen was a fan of the Breaks, which featured Barney and Miller) on drums in 2005. The band earned critical praise from the underground music press for their first two singles, "Rats and Insects" and "848."
