Noticing the trend of black metal taking over their surround music scene of Sweden, Ilkka Viitasalo (vocals), Marko Hautakoski (drum), Timo Sillankorva (guitar) and Tapani Hoikkaniemi (bass) liked what they heard, up until the part where every band in this genre started dissing God. In response, they formed Selfmindead, which took a cue from the aforementioned influences, the only difference was that they prefered to attend churches rather than burning them. With their self-titled release that was eventually licesened in the US through Solid State Records in 1998, Selfmindead had the chance to hit the road throughout Europe in support of it that same year; with the accompaniment of replacement bassist Emil Nikolaisen.
