The adventurous New Orleans trio Seeger, Petersen + Marsalis (SP+M) came together on rare occasions to explore their respective improvisation abilities. The trio came together on two occasions nearly a year apart to complete Finger to the Universe, its debut album, and didn't rehearse in this format before the sessions, preferring instead to explore whatever improvisational results came about. Following the release of Finger to the Universe, SP+M performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and also other area venues.
Guitarist Brian Seeger won much acclaim in New Orleans for his work -- both performing and recording -- with countless jazz artists, including Stanton Moore, Aaron Neville, Rebecca Parris, Quintology, Loren Pickford, Zachary Richard, and many more. Saxophonist Ed Petersen, increasingly known for his tenure at the University of New Orleans, similarly has recorded with numerous esteemed jazz artists -- Kurt Elling, Ruth Brown, Von Freeman, Clark Terry, Ron Carter -- and has performed with even more: Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman, J.J. Goodman, and many more. Drummer/percussionist Jason Marsalis isn't quite as accomplished as his experienced bandmates but is increasing his reputation with each passing year: he's a member of the Marcus Roberts Trio, has worked extensively with his family -- father Ellis Marsalis, brother Delfeayo Marsalis -- and has released solo albums of his own.
