b. Coffeyville, Kansas, USA. Lay worked as a disc jockey and singer on KGGF Coffeyville, and in the mid-60s, toured with Wanda Jackson. In 1973, he gained a small acting role in Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid which starred Kris Kristofferson. Lay became musical director and leader of Roy Clark’s band. When not working with Clark, he fronted his own band, the Wild West. Recording with them, he enjoyed six minor hits during the 80s, including ‘Happy Country Birthday Darling’, and his version of the 1973 Mel Street hit ‘Walk Softly On The Bridges’, but his fondness for rock and rockabilly material did little to attract the traditionalists.
