While Stiff Little Fingers remain the best-known punk band to name themselves after a Vibrators song, Pure Mania took their name from the title of the Vibrators’ debut album. Formed in Sweden in 1984, the band comprised Hans Spennare (guitar/vocals), Engan (vocals/bass), Benke (guitar/vocals) and Stahl (drums). After taking a few years to perfect their potent blend of new wave power rock, the band began to record prolifically by the end of the decade. Although the essence of Pure Mania’s sound, drenched in power chords and attitude, remained ostensibly the same, the sequence of their albums revealed the growing influence of more experimental groups such as the Cult and Nomads. As one critic stated of their successful 1993 release, Alibaba Baby, ‘If Vikings had the chance to plug their axes into a bank of Marshall amps, then maybe this is the sort of sound they’d have made.’
