Mauro de Almeida was the alleged writer of most of the lyrics for "Pelo Telefone" (the controversial first-recorded samba). Later, he published a letter in the Carioca press, declaring that he only adjusted to the music verses of public domain. He wrote several plays, like Presidente Antes de Nascer, Adeus, Não lhe Pague, Amor E Modas, Viúva Da Alegria, Com A Corda No Pescoço, Desarvorada Do Amor, Do Cruzeiro ao Cruzeiro, Cozinheira Granfina, Decadência, Sempre Chorada, No País Dos Níqueis, some of them in partnership with Luís Rocha and Cardoso de Meneses. He published a compilation of plays in Ondas Teatrais (A Noite publishers, Rio de Janeiro, 1938).
