b. 12 January 1939, Liverpool, England, d. 4 May 2007. Joe Butler played bass with the Liverpool bands Sonny Webb And The Cascades and the Hillsiders, with whom he was a member from 1964-93. He left because of his increasing commitments to a management agency and to the Liverpool radio station, Radio City. He presented their country show and their weekend breakfast programmes for many years. During this time he started playing with a new version of the Hillsiders. He also works with a former Hillsider, the steel guitarist Ronnie Bennett, in Hartford West, a popular country band around Merseyside. ‘We play standard material as I’ve not written for a while’, said Butler in 1995. ‘It’s about time I got back to songwriting again.’ He should not be confused with the former member of the 60s group, the Lovin’ Spoonful.
