b. England. Producer Gavin MacKillop is a classically trained pianist and vocalist, but his inhibitions prevented him from taking up a performance-based occupation. He began his career in 1981 at Virgin Records’ Manor and Townhouse studios in England. As engineer to Steve Lilywhite, he worked with several acts on the Virgin roster including Simple Minds, as well as other rock/pop acts such as Big Country and Echo And The Bunnymen. His first production project was General Public’s All The Rage album, which included the hit single, ‘Tenderness’. Subsequent projects for Virgin included Public Image Limited and Do Ré Mi, before he became a freelance producer in 1984. Through the rest of the 80s he worked with a number of groups including Hunters And Collectors, Shriekback and the La’s. In 1990 MacKillop moved to the USA and enjoyed huge success with the breakthrough of Toad The Wet Sprocket (producing both their albums of the early 90s) and the Rembrandts. His other credits included rising folk star May Moore.
