In 1962 a studio recording band known as the Jambo Boys decided to change their name and embark on an independent career. As the Equator Sound Band, they became one of the most important groups in Kenya through the '60s. The Equator Sound was typified by two-part harmonies, walking bass, and lead guitar. The band subsequently changed names several times, becoming the African Eagles and the Eagles Lupopo.
