b. New York City, New York, USA. Born and raised in Harlem, Perez sang from early childhood. Inspired by the vocal styles of Shirley Horn, Abbey Lincoln, Carmen McRae and Nina Simone, she first sang publicly in Los Angeles, before relocating to Amsterdam, the Netherlands where she polished her vocal and performance skills, playing club dates in Europe and later back in the USA. Coolly relaxed, yet with a fiery undercurrent, her repertoire draws from popular standards and jazz themes, to some of which she has provided lyrics, such as Cedar Walton’s ‘Holy Land’. Filled to overflowing though the jazz vocal scene of the early 00s might be, Perez has many of the qualities necessary to make the grade.
