Crypto Star began in 1996 in Greeley, Colorado. The band practiced and rehearsed its unique brand of ska music, fusing rock, rap and punk into its sound. After touring throughout Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region and developing a loyal fan base, Crypto Star released its debut album in November 1998. Ska 101 received a large amount of local and regional praise as well as airplay on college and local radio stations. But by 1999, Crypto Star wasn't content to rely on the same format, instead adopting more of a jazz sound into its music. By adding a horn section and keyboards, this sound was brought to fruition. In January of 2000, the band released its second album Time. Crypto Star has performed at various festivals, including Thornton Fest, A Taste of Colorado, and Denver's Earth Day celebrations. In 2000, the band toured nationally.
