Manchester, England-based indie rock quartet comprising John Allen (guitar/vocals), Andrew Rowley (guitar), Adam Stopford (drums), and Ben Smith (bass). Formed at the turn of the new millennium, the quartet spent the first few years of their existence recording limited edition singles and building up a fiercely loyal fanbase. The band’s involvement with the hip Manchester-based Akoustik Anarkhy Recordings label helped gain them further press inches, and a contract was signed after they performed a well-received gig at one of the label’s unsigned nights. Maintaining the DIY ethic of their earlier releases, the band’s debut album was recorded in their own rehearsal space. Late Night Shopping received strong reviews on its release in summer 2007. A mixture of straightforward indie pop and atmospheric post-rock, the splashes of psychedelic colour punctuating tracks such as ‘The Driver’ and ‘Shot’ helped raise Autokat out of the ranks of guitar rock wannabes.
