From the mind of former Fly Pan Am bassist Jean-Sebastien Truchy comes the avant-garde Afro-Kraut grooves of Avec le Soleil Sortant de Sa Bouche. After spending a couple of years honing their angular, cyclical funk, the Montreal-based quartet signed with Constellation Records (Godspeed You! Black Emperor) to release their debut LP Zubberdust!. Apart from some wordless, almost chant-like singing, Zubberdust! is a mostly instrumental affair based around two longform pieces that play out continuously, but also feature track markers at distinct thematic developments. Avec le Soleil Sortant de Sa Bouche are most certainly art rockers, but amid the Krautrock drones are some enchanting grooves, unique melodies, and tight, fiery musicianship. With their subtle electronic textures and quirky riffs, they're as engaging on headphones as they are blasted through the hi-fi and their mix of tough and clever make them the most unusual of party bands.
