Yoriko Sugiura and Wolfgang Bockhold are two musicians of very high caliber. They offer traditional pieces as well as modern and contemporary classical pieces. The first piece has been composed by the well-known shakuhachi player and composer Hôzan Yamamoto, and is in a more traditional style. The second piece presents variations on the known Japanese folk song "Sakura" (Cherry Blossoms). Sugiura shows here an incredible talent and musicianship. She is simply amazing. The third piece is the well-known solo shakuhachi piece "Shika No Toone," one of the most important of the pieces of the Zen repertoire. Bockhold shows an outstanding mastery of the shakuhachi. The fourth and sixth pieces are contemporary pieces for koto and shakuhachi; yet, a Japanese character is felt throughout both pieces. The fifth piece is a traditional classical piece sung and played by Sugiura on the Shamisen, accompanied by the shakuhachi. This excellent CD is unfortunately available only as an import. For lovers of high-quality Japanese classical music, this CD is a must.
