AllMusic Review by

One of the foremost groups in San Francisco's ultra-geeky surf-garage scene, the Phantom Surfers generally are a lot of fun live and are at least mildly humorous. Along with playing some better-than-average surf instrumentals, the band dresses up in silly costumes, chucks various items at the audience, and tells bad jokes. But on this strange concept album, they do X-rated surf music with help from pals Dolomite and Rudy Ray Moore (old-school, black, X-rated comedians), which sounds like an okay idea but turns out to be excruciating torture. Rife with some of the worst office jokes ever uttered, XXX Party is an album that undoubtedly wishes to be not funny in an ironic way, but then succeeds beyond its wildest expectations. It is a far-out idea -- that surf music, as benign a musical genre as there is, could be combined with jokes that are extremely nasty -- but the Phantom Surfers fail utterly in making this record even mildly entertaining or listenable.
