AllMusic Review by

This EP was the first release by the label Dreams By Degrees and the first in their Seasons series of 10" EPs. You cannot go wrong with Coastal when looking for a winter-feeling band. Their songs have a sedate warmth, the economy of means of creatures conserving their energy to keep warm. "Winter" is all that: a cozy indie song by the fireplace, strongly reminiscent of Low, although Jason Gough's voice has a charm of its own. "Ashes," with its topic hinting at David Bowie's "Space Oddity" and "Ashes to Ashes," is also ear-pleasing, but not as downright catchy as the rendition of the Cocteau Twins' "Primitive Heart." Easy but heartfelt and macerated in wintertime melancholia, these songs make a very fine EP.
