Vargas was the most creative head of '80s merengue, and in fact pretty much masterminded the entire merengue renaissance of the period. Virtually every Dominican band or singer of the '80s either started out with him or was encouraged by him. He had hit after hit, and used his popularity as license for experiments. A list of the external novelties -- harmonica, highly original guitar licks, what sounds like harp (though none's credited), ditto harpsichord -- no way does justice to the general air of jovially manic creativity.
