This excellent trio from Wilmington, VA, holds their own with their New York counterparts. Pianist Eugene Uman, bassist Thomson Kneeland, and drummer Claire Arenius perform a wide-ranging program consisting of seven of the drummer's originals. The music hints at freer sounds, but mostly is advanced hard bop. Uman is generally the lead voice, but there are also fine solos from Kneeland and Arenius and the musicians work very well together. Whether it is melancholy interludes or more passionate flurries, the trio is tight and swinging.
