In terms of pop music, it's just not that easy to strike the balance between hooks enough to catch the masses and lyrics poetic enough to impress the cynics. Now try it in your early twenties and see what you come up with. That's the task Evan & Jaron took on with We've Never Heard of You Either. Seeing as they'd actually been at it for a while, they stood a reasonable chance of succeeding. Indeed, this release shows further growth in the boys as songwriters and singers; they just haven't yet reached that crucial point of equipoise. They come close, though, on a few tracks. "Could've Been James Dean," "Show You Sometime," and "Like the Rain" are all pretty good tunes, particularly the former. If you listen real hard, you can hear the really good tunes just itching to come out. The foreshadows are unmistakable; they just won't see daylight until a few years further down the road. But it's kind of cool to catch a couple of stars on the rise and be able to say you knew them way back when.
