Although Cloak/Dagger's debut album is on the influential math rock and emo label Jade Tree, it has little of the musical complexity and lyrical angst most associated with the label. WE ARE is, instead, a conscious throwback to the early days of Washington DC hardcore, when bands like Minor Threat, Faith, and Void were the biggest names in town. While it lacks the musical innocence of those pioneering hardcore bands, and adds perhaps a touch of the post-hardcore flavor of the mid-'90s scene, WE ARE is a heartfelt, sweaty evocation of a primal time in Washington's musical past.
