Eddie Bert, a solid bop-oriented trombonist who has been an important (if underrated) part of the jazz scene since the mid-'40s, is in top form on this set from his own tiny Mothlight label. Bert is heard in duos with bassist Stephen Roane from 1985 and trios from four years later that add guitarist James Chirillo; some selections feature Bert overdubbing several trombones. The music mixes together a few standards (including "Bongo Bop," "Social Call," and "Foolin' Myself") with obscurities and originals, all of which give Bert an opportunity to display his warm tone and creative ideas in very intimate settings. This lesser-known CD is excellent, one of Bert's best all-round showcases, and certainly worth a search.
