Other than the fact that he plays guitar instead of piano, Eddie Hazel is a bit reminiscent of Bobby Troup in his singing and his music. A decent swing player but far from a virtuoso, Hazel has a certain charm in his performances. This CD reissues a full album and half of another LP, featuring Hazel in trios with either Bernie Taylor or Mickey Golizio on bass and Lou Slingerland or Dave Larson on drums. Although a bit of an acquired taste, he sounds fine on such songs as "Lady Be Good," "Little Girl Blue," "Nina Never Knew," and several medleys, playing "cocktail guitar."
