AllMusic Review by

Sony's Verdi at the Met is a 20-CD box set of remastered recordings of historic radio broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera in New York, appearing on CD for the first time. Collected here are performances of La Traviata (1935), Otello (1940), Un ballo in maschera (1940), Rigoletto (1945), Falstaff (1949), Simon Boccanegra (1950), La forza del destino (1952), Macbeth (1959), Nabucco (1960), and Aïda (1967). Singers who became legends at the Metropolitan Opera star in these operas, including Rosa Ponselle, Jussi Bjorling, Bidú Sayão, Leonard Warren, Giuseppe di Stefano, Richard Tucker, Carlo Bergonzi, Leontyne Price, Grace Bumbry, and Robert Merrill, among many others, all sounding vibrant in these restored performances. The featured conductors are Ettore Panizza, Cesare Sodero, Fritz Reiner, Fritz Stiedry, Erich Leinsdorf, and Thomas Schippers, captured in their prime. This and a similar set, Wagner at the Met, were released in 2013 to mark these composers' 200th birthday celebrations.
