AllMusic Review by

This four-CD set isn't quite as comprehensive as it might have been. All of the major bases are covered, from Paul Robeson, the Weavers, and Count Basie to Alison Brown and John McEuen, and even Circus Maximus ("Oops -- I Can Dance") is here, with cuts by the Frost ("Sweet Lady Love") and the Third Power ("Gettin' Together"). But there's no Sandy Bull, and there are other holes -- where is Bruce Langhorne? On the other hand, the label has included tracks off of its recent Newport Folk Festival archival releases, and six previously unissued cuts by Leon Bibb, Buffy Sainte-Marie, the Greenbriar Boys, and the Siegel-Schwall Band. The booklet gives a good overview of the company's history, with detailed histories of each artist present, and the sound is generally extremely high quality.
