When the electronic sounds of dancehall started to supplant the bass-heavy dread of traditional roots reggae, most old school reggae musicians claimed it was a fad that wouldn't last. A good chunk of those musicians were soon sidelined as dancehall became reggae's dominant style. A few adapted, like producer/mixer King Jammy, and a very select few, like legendary reggae vocalist Dennis Brown, prospered.
UNFORGETTABLE, produced by Jammy, bridges the gap between old school and new. The computers and clicking sequencers are present and accounted for, as are the dancehall-required cameos by other singers and toasters, but the roots of these powerful, supple songs are in Danny and Clevie Browne's heavyweight bass and drums and Brown's always-astonishing voice. This album proves that roots and dancehall reggae can coexist.
