AllMusic Review by

For their first full-length effort Umber, Bitch Magnet swells to the rank of four-piece with the inclusion of former Squirrel Bait guitarist David Grubbs; the new twin-guitar attack both refines and bolsters the group's monolithic sound, which rages impressively on tracks like the opening "Motor," the incendiary "Navajo Ace," and the lurching "Big Pining." At the eye of the storm is the calming "Douglas Leader," a quietly hypnotic minimalist ode 180-degrees removed from everything else in the Bitch Magnet oeuvre to date; equally intriguing is "Clay," a taut exploration of extremist spatial dynamics. The CD appends the Star Booty EP, first issued in 1988 and produced by Steve Albini.
