Tracie Spencer endeared herself to America by winning on Star Search in 1986, then followed that with a hit record at age 12. Her voice was in the proverbial kiddie-pop stage during this album, but underneath the layers of cuteness lurked some potential soulfulness. Wisely, no one tried to make her another Little Esther; she just handled the melody nicely and occasionally added some emphasis or punctuation to a lyric, but otherwise chose to act her age.
