AllMusic Review by

There is nearly two hours of music on this double LP, all taken from a historic Town Hall concert. The swing-oriented performances (which have been reissued by Mosaic in their massive Commodore reissue series) are often quite exciting with strong appearances by such greats as vibraphonist Red Norvo, tenors Flip Phillips and Charlie Ventura, pianist Teddy Wilson, bassist Slam Stewart, tenor-saxophonist Don Byas (who has a pair of classic duets with Stewart on "Indiana" and "I Got Rhythm"), trumpeter Bill Coleman, drummer Gene Krupa and violinist Stuff Smith. Although a couple of selections (particularly a 16-minute "In a Mellotone") go on a bit too long, there are plenty of memorable moments during this highly recommended set which deserves to be reissued in full on CD.
