Part of the Ethnic Sound Series by Victor released primarily in Japan, this album deals with cross beat drumming from the Senegalese island of Fadiouth. The recording presumably took place during a festival, and the audience is noticeable as such (though that should be taken as a plus, given the artificial sound of many studio recordings of African music). The playing is rapid and crisp, though occasionally it takes on an almost endless seeming quality to it. For fans of Senegalese drumming (sabar, etc.), this wouldn't be a bad pick. For newcomers, something slightly cleaner (say Mapathe Diop's release on Village Pulse) might be a better choice.
