On To the Sky, trombonist and composer/arranger Ryan Haines pays tribute to the United States Air Force, utilizing a big band to perform eight of his originals and two standards. Both of the latter ("Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans" and "I'll Wait for You") have vocals. Unfortunately the personnel for the orchestra (other than the key soloists) is not listed. The music is conventional, swings hard, and Haines, who has solos on five of the ten selections, proves to be an outstanding player. This spirited date is easily recommended to fans of modern swinging big bands.
