When Island decided, at long last, to reissue Sly & Robbie's long out-of-print and greatly lamented Raiders of the Lost Dub, it did so in grand fashion, with what amounts to a two-for-one compilation consisting of that album (the "Old School" half) and another album's worth of modern dub from the likes of Mad Professor, Jah Shaka, Dub Syndicate, and Alpha & Omega (the "New School"). The best part is that the new stuff is just as good as the old stuff. Sly & Robbie's dubbed-up versions of Balck Uhuru and Viceroys numbers, as essential as they are, are matched in quality by such stellar material as Alpha & Omega's "One Prayer" and "Rastafari," Mixmaster's militant "Zulu Warrior," and Dub Syndicate's "What Happened?," all of which straddle the line between old-school rhythms and textures and new-school technology. If someone gave a class on dub, they could use this album as a textbook.
