The fine modern hard bop set Time and the City features baritonist Jim Hartog performing eight of his originals, an obscurity, and two standards. The music is essentially straight-ahead jazz although open to later influences. Guitarist Peter McCann is a major asset, keeping the music quite modern both as a soloist and in backing the two horns. The exciting trumpeter Terell Stafford works well with Hartog, bassist Essiet Essiet and drummer Steve Johns are stimulating in support, and Hartog's huge tone and unpredictable ideas keep the music stimulating. This is an excellent effort that has its adventurous moments.
