AllMusic Review by

Joseph "Danny" Cox took his career to a higher level with the success of Rebel Heels in the '80s. Since then, Cox has been involved in many Detroit-area pop and jazz bands and recording projects. He strings together a set of flawlessly composed songs about personal closeness and the distance of mutual love. Poignant and despairing, hope appears in the second to last track, "Broken Bed." While searching to "find a way", the singer finds peace at last in the twilight of the final track "Western Sky." Each song is poetry set to music, and the arrangement is a further indication of both Cox's closeness to the material and his artistic sense. The basic instrumentation is comprised of guitar, bass, and drums. One can not forget Cox's voice, either -- it comes across as both technically adept and full of emotion. The instrumentation is enriched with synth, percussion, and additional texture throughout. Each cut comes across as a moving, personal document. The entire collection both touches the soul and commands the ear, representative of the most compelling and human acoustic guitar-based music. Deeply hopeful and perhaps therapeutic, This Longing rates very high.
