The X Field still sounds quite modern, a measure of how successful this CD from 1995 remains. Guitarist Rodney Jones, best known for his association with Dizzy Gillespie and his years as a soulful sideman, teams up with a top-notch rhythm section which is augmented on most of the selections by the very original altoist Greg Osby. There are many stretches where Jones is only joined by bassist Kenny Davis and drummer Eric Harland; the sparse setting really suits him. Osby's adventurous solos also inspire Jones to stretch himself. Most of the originals may not be all that advanced, but Rodney Jones plays some of the finest solos of his recording career, ranging from the fiery interplay with Osby on "Between Then and Now" to the unaccompanied "Uncle Willie's Moonshine Blues."
