Guided By Voices has made a career out of specializing in the unexpected, and their first ever DVD release, 2001's The Who Went Home and Cried, doesn't fail to disappoint. How many bands have had the guts to record a loose and fun jam on the back porch of their lead singer's house as an official release? Not many, but that's what constitutes half of this DVD, as the group plays stripped-down and acoustic versions of "Submarine Team," "Psychic Pilot Clocks Out," "Strumpet Eye," and "Tractor Rape Chain," among other fan favs (this low-key performance turned out to be bassist Greg Demos' last with the group). The other half of The Who Went Home and Cried is a traditional live plugged-in gig at Los Angeles' Whiskey, featuring rocking versions of "Hot Freaks," "Shocker in Gloomtown," and perhaps GBV's best known song, "I Am a Scientist."
