This CD is the reissue of a mid-'80s limited edition cassette (heavily remastered and sporting Marvel comics-inspired artwork). It splits in two. The first five tracks are taken from a Hawkwind show from the Spirit of the Age tour in 1977 and features Bob Calvert, Dave Brock, Simon King, and Simon House. Those previously unimpressed by the quirky rock number "Quark, Strangeness and Charm" will probably remain so, but "Masters of the Universe" and "Sonic Attack" both get very decent treatment and "Spirit of the Age" is about as good as it ever was. The sound quality is not very good and there is a lot of feedback. The remaining tracks are 1978 studio recordings billed to the Hawklords (Brock, King, Steve Swindells, and Harvey Bainbridge). "Valium 10" is a hard space rock number with a funny opening scene at the dentist's office, but the other two cuts will only appeal to the collector. The Weird Tapes No. 2: Hawkwind Live/Hawklords Studio is aimed at the fan; the casual listener would be well-advised to complete his collection of essential Hawkwind albums first.
