AllMusic Review by

With his elegant ballroom piano and eye for talent, Ray Noble quickly became one of the first bandleaders to make a splash in the U.S. big band scene, briefly becoming a force in the 1930s, aided to no end by the sweet and remarkably elastic vocals of the striking (and tragically short-lived) Al Bowlly. This ASV/Living Era compilation opens on his original 1934 recording of Noble’s most famous composition, “The Very Thought of You,” and continues through his takes, both playful and delicate, on standards ranging from “I’ll String Along with You” to “Way Down Yonder in New Orleans.”
