The lack of support from a major label didn't stop drummer Roland Vasquez from becoming a very popular Latin jazz musician since his early days with GRP. The uncontrollable excitement and spontaneous sound of the remastered The Tides of Time--originally released in 1988 on Soundwings--helps explain why. With a few calming exceptions at the end, this funky collection is filled with danceable Latin rhythms. Vasquez is a solid drummer whose fine compositions leave room for ample soloing by an all star group of friends--including guitarist Mike Stern, saxman Dick Oatts and percussionist Luis Conte, who is perfect for this environment.
