AllMusic Review by

For over 25 years Madredeus has been unleashing a hushed, melancholy storm of quality studio and live albums, as well a fair number of soundtracks, all of which rely heavily on the group's penchant for melding traditional Portuguese music (not necessarily fado) and medieval poetry into a lush, new style of European folk music that's as forward thinking as it is steeped in history. Spirit of Lisbon: The Very Best of Madredeus (the collective's international success came after they were featured in director Wim Wenders 1994 film Lisbon Story), collects 30 of the group's most beloved cuts, as well as a handful of remixes that take the band's intoxicating music into more ambient and worldbeat-informed territories.
